Finding Gratitude in the Midst of Challenges

Sometimes, life throws so much at us that it feels impossible to pause, reflect, and find even a glimmer of gratitude. Many of us may have felt this way over the past year—especially during the holiday season and as the calendar turned to a new year. For Californians in particular, the recent fires have left soot on more than just the landscape. Their impact has weighed heavy on our hearts, testing our resilience and strength.

Yet, gratitude has a way of shining through even the darkest clouds. It doesn’t erase the challenges, but it gives us the strength to carry on, to hope, and to appreciate the beauty in what remains around us.

Reflecting on Where We've Been

For some, Christmas was a time to gather with loved ones, to laugh over a shared meal, and to marvel at twinkling lights. For others, it may have been quieter—a moment to call family instead of visiting, a moment to reflect instead of celebrating. New Year’s was ushered in much the same way, with careful resolutions and silent prayers for brighter days ahead.

But then, the fires came. They wiped away homes, threatened landscapes, and cast billows of smoke where we once saw clear skies. For those of us watching their destruction or feeling their impact up close, it may have been difficult to find anything to feel grateful for amid the chaos.

And yet, even amidst the ashes, there have been moments of connection and hope. First responders risking their safety to help others, neighbors opening their doors to those in need, communities coming together to rebuild. These acts, no matter how small, remind us of the immense kindness and strength that can be found within the human spirit.

The Power of Gratitude

Gratitude becomes even more vital when times are tough. It centers us by focusing on the positives that still exist, even when life feels unpredictable. While our losses are real and painful, each of us can find small pockets of joy to keep us grounded.

For example, perhaps you were able to share a moment of laughter with someone over a phone call. Maybe you're grateful that your family is safe or that a kind stranger smiled at you when you felt overwhelmed. Gratitude doesn’t ask us to dismiss the struggles—it simply redirects our gaze, showing us the good that shines alongside the hard.

Practical Ways to Cultivate Gratitude

If you’re finding it hard to tap into gratitude, you’re not alone. It’s not always easy, especially when so much has happened and the weight of it all feels heavy. However, there are simple ways to practice gratitude and draw its light into your life, even during adversity.

  1. Start a Gratitude Journal. Each day, write down three things you’re thankful for, no matter how small they may feel. Maybe it's having a cup of warm coffee in the morning, the sound of rain on the roof, or a conversation with a friend.

  2. Connect with Others. Whether it’s reaching out to check in on someone or thanking them for being part of your life, gratitude grows when we share it with others.

  3. Find Beauty in the Everyday. Stop for a moment and notice the little joys around you. A patch of blue sky, the way the sun filters through the trees, or the comforting smell of your favorite meal cooking.

  4. Reflect on Resilience. Recognize the strength you’ve shown to weather the challenges of the past year. Gratitude can extend to yourself—to your own perseverance, courage, and spirit.

  5. Pay it Forward. Acts of kindness have a ripple effect. When you express gratitude or lend a hand to someone else, you create more reasons to be thankful for the connections that bind us together.

Looking Ahead with Hope

The year ahead won’t come without its own challenges, but there’s hope to be found in fresh starts. Even as we rebuild—individually and as communities—we can carry the lessons of the past year with us. Gratitude teaches us resilience. It grounds us in what matters most, guiding us to look for the good in every day, even when life feels heavy.

To those impacted by the fires, to those still untangling the highs and lows of the holiday season, and to everyone reflecting on the year that was and the year ahead—you are not alone. Allow gratitude to be your steady companion, reminding you that even in adversity, there is light to be found.

This year, may we all hold gratitude in our hearts and carry it forward, trusting in brighter days and leaning on one another every step of the way.
